My Experience on the Silver Springs Glass Bottom Boat Tour

Since I had to drive an hour one way, I opted for an afternoon extended boat tour. My friend and I enjoyed lunch in downtown Ocala, then headed to the park plenty early.

The entrance fee was only $2 per person and she checked our glass bottom boat tour reservation as well.

Once inside the park, we headed to the water to enjoy the views and watch the boats going and coming. Then we enjoyed walking some of the paved trail, and I definitely plan to give myself more time to explore next time.

There are shops, places to get ice cream or coffee, a restaurant and restrooms next to the boat dock area. We used the restroom and I bought some water just before we had to line up for the tour.

Boarding the Boat

We were told to be at the dock about 15 minutes before the departure time and there was another group there as well for the 30-minute tour. Eventually, someone had the 90-minute tour line-up and we were checked in.

Stepping onto the boat was easy and relatively stable. It was doable for everyone and there were a variety of age groups on the boat. My friend and I made our way around toward the front since we were close to the front of the line. The seating is one oval bench seat facing the glass bottom in the center.

Our boat was open on the sides, which we ended up loving! It felt like a river safari and kept it from feeling too stuffy for the 90-minute ride.

Wildlife and Tour Sightings

It had been cold in Florida when we did this tour. Even though we went on a sunny afternoon, the temperature was still cooler which increased the odds of seeing manatees! One of our first stops was a smaller spring along the run and soon after that stop, we spotted a manatee!

There were other glass bottom boats and kayakers around early on, but once we got further down the river, we started seeing more wildlife. Birds, turtles sunning, and more manatees!

Eventually, someone on our boat spotted some monkeys! Our guide told us it was actually rare to see monkeys even though there are hundreds of them around the forest. By the time we had come back to this area, the monkeys had moved on. It was truly a rare sighting!

We also came across numerous alligators sunning on the banks and trying to get warm. One gator was in his usual spot according to our guide and we actually got quite close to it!

We even had a moment when a manatee went under the boat and we saw part of it from the glass bottom. Overall, the tour exceeded my expectations, but it is important to know that wildlife sightings will differ for each tour.

End of Tour

Just before we dock, we are taken to see the main spring! All attention is turned to the glass bottom and the guide offers insights and helps to explain what we are seeing. Then we look at the statues under the water while the guide explains their origin.

We pull into the dock and the tour guide mentions tips can be thrown into the glass bottom area (bring cash if you can for tips). Then we disembark with a few steps up to get to the dock.

Since we did an afternoon tour, all the shops were closed and so was the restroom upon our return! My friend and I just made our way back to the car to start our one hour drive home.

If you do an afternoon tour, I recommend getting there early to walk some of the paved trails for a bit. It was a beautiful day when I visited and I’d definitely return to enjoy more of the walking trails in the future!

Is the Silver Springs Glass Bottom Boat Tour Worth It?

Yes! I absolutely consider the Silver Springs glass bottom boat tour to be worth it! The real question is which one (30 or 90-minute) and should you do a kayak tour instead?

I’ve paddled Silver Springs several times in the last few years, but I still enjoyed the glass bottom boat tour. It’s a unique experience to Silver Springs, offers insights and information you wouldn’t know on your own and allows you to see things like the spring itself or the statues.

And while the water is clear and you can see below from a kayak or paddleboard, the glass bottom boat view is much clearer.

Overall, the Silver Springs glass bottom boat tour is relatively inexpensive and offers a unique and fun experience. The beauty of the area and novelty of the glass bottom is worth it even if the wildlife is shy on your visit.

This park is so beautiful and offers one of my favorite paddleboarding experiences ever! If you want to kayak, consider the 30-minute glass bottom boat tour and get the best of both worlds. For a highly rated kayak tour consider: Glass Bottom Kayak Tours of Silver Springs

What to Expect on the Silver Springs Glass Bottom Boat Tour

Here’s a quick explanation of what to expect on the Silver Springs Glass Bottom Boat Tour.

The Boats Themselves

As my friend and I waited for our extended tour, we noticed two types of glass bottom boats. One was more enclosed, but had windows on the side that opened. The other was open on the sides, but still had a covering.

Our tour took place on the open one, which we felt disappointed by at first because it was a cold day. However, we ended up loving it! We were told this was the boat utilized for the extended, 90-minute boat tour. It felt like were on a river safari and I think it’s perfect for the extended tour so it doesn’t feel as stuffy for that longer duration.

Both boats have seating around the rim, with the glass viewing in the middle. There’s no assigned seats, but there’s no bad spot either! It’s nice and shaded and offers everyone on the boat unhindered views of the glass bottom as well as views around whether through a window or opening.

What You Actually See Underwater

You can see straight to the bottom, because the water is so clear! These views will include the rocky area where the spring is located, grass, fish, and we even saw parts of manatees for a brief moment through the glass bottom!

There are also statues that were utilized in a movie that you will get to see underwater. While most of the wildlife wins were seen from the side of the boat, the glass bottom offers a fun and unique view as well.

The Guide & Commentary

The tour guide is helpful with interesting facts and also mentioning what you can possibly see and how to spot it. Our tour had great wildlife spotters! While the guide has to steer the boat and offer insights, it’s helpful if you have people on the boat who are good at spotting wildlife as well!

The guide offered us insights into movies that were filmed there, how the monkeys ended up there, facts about the wildlife, and how much water comes out of the springs!

It was amazing to hear the main spring at Silver Springs can fill an Olympic size pool in 45 seconds! Hearing that it delivers 550 million gallons per day is impressive, but the pool concept really paints an impressive picture.

30-Minute versus 90-Minute Boat Tour

I drove about an hour, so I opted to do the 90-minute boat tour. While I thought it would be more worth my time and drive, I wasn’t sure if it would be boring. I’ve enjoyed paddling down this spring river, and just wasn’t sure the extended boat tour would stay fun for the full 90 minutes.

My friend and I were both pleasantly surprised! The 90-minute tour was great and we both enjoyed it! We saw the point at which the 30-minute tour would turn around and we were able to ride quite a ways past that point.

The 30-minute tour would also be worth it and is probably the better tour for kids overall. There were young kids on our tour and they were not happy for most of the trip. The 30-minute tour will give you a good experience in a much more concise time frame.

Of course, the 90-minute tour will increase your chances of seeing more wildlife! We were so blessed on our tour and saw manatees, alligators, and even some monkeys (least common sighting)! There were plenty of bird sightings as well, and we saw the turtles that love to sun themselves.

30-Minute Tour: A good overview and you will definitely see the main spring, statues and some wildlife. Also, the better option for young kids.
90-Minute Tour: Includes the main spring and statues, but increases your chances for wildlife sightings.

Looking for a fun activity and general overview? Choose the 30-minute, standard option.
Want to maximize your chances of seeing wildlife? Choose the 90-minute, extended tour option.

Silver Springs Boat Tour vs Kayaking (Which Is Better?)

I loved both, but they are different experiences. If you have the larger part of the day, consider doing both if you can’t decide.

Effort

If you do the loop, it will require some paddling upstream. While the paddle isn’t generally tough, it requires effort while the boat ride requires none.

  • Boat = zero effort
  • Kayak = active paddling

Wildlife

Both offer possible wildlife sightings but from very different vantage points.

  • Kayak = closer to wildlife
  • Boat = better underwater visibility

Time Commitment

  • Boat = 30 or 90 minutes
  • Kayak = 2–4+ hours

Best For

  • Boat = families, seniors, casual visitors
  • Kayak = adventure lovers, photographers

I’ve done the scenic loop paddle and the 5-mile downstream journey. Soon I will have a review of each to help you decide if it’s right for you.

Tips Before You Go

Here are a few helpful tips to make the most of your Silver Springs glass bottom boat tour at Silver Springs State Park:

Book Early

Tours operate throughout the day, but earlier departures usually have calmer water, better wildlife activity (on warmer days), and fewer crowds.

If you’re going on a weekend or during cooler months (manatee season), it’s important to reserve your spot to get your preferred time slot. Book directly on the Silver Springs website.

Choose the Right Tour Length

If you’re short on time or visiting with young kids, the 30-minute tour is a great overview. If wildlife is your priority and you don’t mind sitting longer, the 90-minute extended tour increases your chances of spotting manatees, alligators, birds, and even monkeys.

No Bad Seats

There really isn’t a bad seat, but sitting near the center of the boat can give you a great vantage point of the glass panels without having to lean too much. Or if you sit on the end it’s easier to see wildlife from either side.

Bring Polarized Sunglasses

Polarized sunglasses help reduce glare when you’re scanning the water from the sides of the boat. It’s not necessary but can be helpful!

Dress for the Weather

Some boats are more enclosed, while others are open on the sides. On cooler days, bring an extra layer just in case. On hot days, you’ll appreciate light clothing and sun protection.

Don’t Rely Only on the Glass

Some of the best wildlife sightings happen off to the sides of the boat. Keep your eyes scanning the riverbanks and tree branches as that’s where you’re more likely to spot alligators, birds, and monkeys.

Give Yourself Time for the Trails or Kayaking

Silver Springs is a beautiful state park! Go earlier than your tour or stay after to enjoy some of the paved trails. It’s a lovely walk and I will definitely give myself more time for that on my next visit.

You can also give yourself some time to rent a kayak and enjoy the water from a closer vantage point. If you prefer a guide, book a kayak tour and make the most of your day at Silver Springs State Park.

Best Time to Take the Silver Springs Glass Bottom Boat Tour

In the warmer months, I recommend early morning tour options. There will be less crowds and more wildlife.

On colder days, you have more flexibility. As the day warms up, you’re more likely to see alligators sunning to get warm and manatees looking for food.

Hot months: early tours
Cold Days: more flexibility
