Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine Historic District Review: A Good Base?

In this Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine Historic District review, I’ll cover the location, room, hotel amenities, and what I did and did not like about my stay.

My friend won a stay here when she won some concert tickets at her job. I don’t live too far from St. Augustine, so I always have a car when I visit. We stayed one night, enjoyed the historic district for a bit, and enjoyed the concert on Anastasia Island just over the bridge.

This hotel is great for affordability and being somewhat close to the action, but is definitely not for everyone! Here’s my full Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine Historic District review.

Where Is the Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine Historic District Located?

The Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine Historic District is located closer to the Fountain of Youth than to St. George Street. While this end of the historic district is walkable, it’s not as pedestrian friendly as St. George Street and the heart of the historic area.

It appears to be on the San Sebastián River on the map, but it’s actually on a major road, so the water is not a draw. The benefit of this hotel is it’s more affordable being further from the heart of the historic district, but still close enough to walk if you don’t mind the extra steps.

Since I don’t live too far from St. Augustine, I always have my car when I visit. It’s close enough to walk and far enough a car would make sense. Ultimately, I’d suggest a closer location if you plan to walk, but if you have a car and plan to explore more than just the historic district, this hotel makes a great base!

Lobby and Common Areas

When I first walked into the lobby I noticed how good it smelled. It was also extremely spacious, but still felt welcoming. The employee who helped us during checkin was kind, attentive, and helpful!

There was a snack shop next to the checkin area, but we never ended up buying anything. However, it was well stocked and offered a good variety.

The pool sat on the side of the Hilton Garden Inn, but overlooked the carpark. The pool area was on the small end, but there were plenty of lounge chairs available. My friend and I never enjoyed or relaxed by the pool, but we saw it every time we used the side door.

Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine Rooms

My friend and I stayed in a room with two queen beds. The room was modern and spacious. We didn’t feel cramped at all with our luggage. There is a closet for hanging clothes, and a large dresser if you do plan to stay a while.

The bathroom felt roomy for one, but two would be a crowd. It was nice and clean and there was plenty of counter space.

My only real complaint was the bed itself. The mattress wasn’t that comfortable and definitely the least comfortable Hilton bed I’ve ever experienced. Of course, I did get some sleep so it wasn’t awful, but it didn’t live up to the standard I’d expect.

Breakfast at Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine

My friend won this stay with some concert tickets at her job and so breakfast was included. This is not typical for most reservations, so keep that in mind.

We were able to choose from a few different breakfast options that were all priced around the $10 mark give or take a little. I had a standard breakfast and it was decent, but I think St. Augustine offers much better and more memorable restaurants for any meal.

Is Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine Good Value?

Overall, the Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine Historic District is a great value! It’s about half the price of the Hilton St. Augustine Historic Bayfront, while still technically in the main area between the two rivers.

It’s close yet far from the main historic district, which is why it’s such a good value. If you don’t mind a lot of walking or you have a car, this is a great option to consider! If you’re only spending one day in St. Augustine, this would be a great base as you’ll want to be exploring the whole day anyway!

Pros and Cons of Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine Historic District

This hotel is close to the action without being in the thick of it. The Hilton Garden Inn St. Augustine Historic District offers a comfortable stay at an affordable price. The lobby is spacious and there’s an on-site restaurant if you need.

The bed wasn’t that comfortable, which was the major con I have for this hotel. As stated, it’s not in the heart of the action, so you will want a car or good walking shoes.

The pool is neutral for me. It’s not a large area and being right next to the carpark there will be onlookers. It did look inviting and kids would have a good time. There’s also an attempt to make the area semi-private with the enclosure and shrubs. However, it’s a con to me that it’s by the parking lot with easy onlookers going in and out the side door, but a pro that they have a pool and made it a nice setting.

Pros:

  • Clean and modern rooms
  • Spacious lobby
  • On-site restaurant and bar
  • Good value
  • Walkable to historic district

Cons:

  • Not in the heart of the action
  • Bed wasn’t that comfortable
  • Best with a car or if you’re open to walking a lot

Final Verdict — Is It a Good Base for Exploring St. Augustine?

If you have a car or you love walking, the Hilton Garden Inn in St. Augustine’s historic district is a good base. Just remember that it’s not in the heart of the historic district, but that can be beneficial, especially if you want to go on day trips from St. Augustine.

The area where this hotel sits, doesn’t have that same walkability feel the heart of the historic district has, but it’s close to A1A which offers a sidewalk to the main area. If you’re spending three days in St. Augustine without a car it’s doable, but not the most convenient option.

Of course, if you want to save a little money this is a worthwhile option!
