Blue Lagoon Beach Resort Fiji Review As A Solo Traveler

I visited Fiji last year and island hopping in the Yasawa Islands is one of my favorite trips! Fiji is not exactly the first place that comes to mind as a solo traveler, but it ended up being such a great destination! The Yasawa Islands of Fiji stole my heart and I loved that there were options ranging from budget friendly dorms to beach-side villas!

I can’t recommend island hopping enough, but if you need help selecting resorts I’m happy to share my experiences! Here is my Blue Lagoon Beach Resort Fiji review as a solo traveler.

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort Fiji Review

First Impressions

The Blue Lagoon Beach Resort is on the last stop of the Yasawa Flyer ferry! The trip took about four hours from Port Denarau. Each resort will bring their boats to the ferry to drop off guests who are checking out and pick up those of us checking in. This whole process was smooth at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort in Fiji. Though I did trip getting off the boat stepping into the sand. No injury (other than to my pride) and the staff was right there to help me get backup.

The beach and water color here is breathtaking! It’s so inviting and mesmerizing.

Check-In

Once on the beach, we were ushered to a welcome area. Every resort in Fiji sings a welcome song! It’s adorable! After we all made it to this welcome area, they sang to us! They reviewed how to sign up for daily tours and when the meals were served. From then, we were called by name to grab our luggage that they transported for us from the ferry and then escorted to the accommodation we booked.

Since I chose to save money by staying in dorms while in the Yasawa Islands, I was taken to the dorms and shown where the bathrooms were as well. We arrived at 1PM, by this point it was 1:30PM so I hurried to grab lunch and then make it to the Village Visit at 2PM. It was tight, but lunch was served quickly and I was able to make it!

First Impression of Blue Lagoon Beach Resort Fiji as a Solo Traveler

My first impressions as a solo female traveler of the Blue Lagoon Beach Resort were great! I felt just as taken care of as anyone else and I loved seeing all different types of travelers from families to couples to friend groups!

The dorms and shared bathrooms were clean! There were signs around to direct you to the dining area and the resort employees were always helpful and pleasant!

The beach looked amazing and the vibe of the resort felt approachable. It had beachy vibes but still felt like a resort.

Accommodation at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort

The accommodation options at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort cater to every type of traveler! If you are solo and want to keep it budget friendly, you can choose a dorm. If you want budget friendly but would prefer your own room, you can book the Bula Lodge. You will share a bathroom, but have your own room.

However, I met solo travelers with every type of accommodation. Some in the dorms, some in private rooms with the shared bathrooms and some with private beach-side villas! Whatever your budget and preference, there is an option for you!

Families and couples have plenty of options as well from garden views to Beach Views! There is even a two bedroom Palm Villa that sleeps six which is perfect for larger families!

Dorms and Shared Bathrooms Review

The dorms were very clean! I also loved that there were NO bunk beds! The bathroom was clean and kept clean throughout the day. When dealing with shared bathrooms there can be a variety of experiences, but overall the dorms and bathroom at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort were great! I also appreciated hot water for showers (which was not the case in all the resorts I stayed).

Staying in dorms isn’t necessarily the most comfortable, but overall I’d rate the dorms at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort the best of the ones I stayed!

Privacy and Security

Staying in a dorm meant little privacy. However, walking to and from the dorms to the dining hall, I can say the rooms all seemed private! The dorms are on the far end of the resort, so I walked by all other accommodation options, so I can confirm they are private.

I always felt safe in Fiji’s Yasawa Islands in general. There always seemed to be an employee around if needed, and all other travelers were respectful!

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort Dining Experience

Dining Plans are Compulsory

It’s worth noting, dining plans are compulsory! This is the case with all resorts in the Yasawa Islands. The main reason is there are little to no options for eating anywhere other than your resort. Some islands actually have only one resort.

While Blue Lagoon Beach Resort is not the only resort on Nacula Island, the dining option is still compulsory. This is just worth noting in terms of pricing as the room price is one aspect but your final price will include dining per person.

Breakfast at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort

Breakfast was delicious. It was setup buffet style, but had a wide range of options from hot to cold. There were plenty of protein options, fruit and of course coffee!

While it was not fancy, it was excellent quality. I loved breakfast and enjoyed taking my time enjoying the views and the internet.

Lunch at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort

Lunch at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort was also solid. You only select items from a menu, but there were plenty of options! Burgers to wraps, I always enjoyed the lunch options!

Dinner at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort

dinner menu | blue lagoon beach resort fiji review as a solo travelerDinner is where Blue Lagoon Beach Resort really shined! The menu each of the two nights was different. There was a soup of the night and then four options to choose from for “Entree” (appetizer) and four options under “Mains.” And for my favorite category (I have a sweet tooth) there were three dessert options from which to choose!

This was the first resort I stayed in the Yasawa Islands, but I was told by other guests it had the best food. After my two weeks in Fiji, I can agree the best food I had was at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort!

Dinner as a Solo Traveler

In addition to having the best food, they also had the best experience for solo travelers! At breakfast or lunch I was asked if I would be okay  being seated with other solo travelers at dinner. First, I loved the fact I was asked just in case I was not feeling it. Second, I loved that they offered it!

Overall, Blue Lagoon Beach Resort was the BEST dining experience I had while in Fiji!

I easily met the most people this way! And since some solo travelers were not in the dorms, they were able to meet people more easily as well! There was a solo traveler from Germany, a European girl living in Australia, an American who came to Fiji to work, but took a few days to relax before heading home, a female Australian paramedic from Melbourne and an introverted American guy from California! It made dinner so much more fun!

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort also offered Kava Ceremonies on some nights during dinner. And after dinner, there were games and activities offered as well!

Activities and Recreation at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort

Sawa-i-Lau caves

sawa-i-lau-cavesI booked Blue Lagoon Beach Resort because I wanted to see the Sawa-i-Lau caves. There are days trips offered from the main Fiji island, but it takes four hours to get to the caves. However, staying at a resort close by that offers it allows you to miss the major crowds.

I loved the cave experience! You get to enjoy the open cave, but if you want you can dive under and go into the an inner cave! Probably more than half of us on our group elected to go into the inner cave and it was so cool! It was very dark so there’s no pictures, but I definitely recommend the experience!

We were the first group to arrive to the caves, but one other group arrived while we were there. The experience was amazing and it’s not offered at every resort, so if you want to see the caves, make sure you choose a resort that offers it.

Village Visit

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort also offers village visits, or if you’re around on a Sunday you can attend church in the village.

The Village Visit was amazing! We saw the elementary school for the island as well as the high school for several islands. We also stopped at one of the three churches in the village before making our way to the community center. At the church we heard their choir and then the choir moved to the community center where we experienced traditional song and dance from the Fijian culture.

Activities

If you are interested in scuba diving or fishing, there are also opportunities for both! Snorkeling is free at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort! You can grab the equipment from the tour and activity center and simply snorkel the beautiful reef right off the beach!

There is also a hiking path you can do on your own, if you don’t want to do the guided hike. If you do it on your own, be sure to sign in at the activity center so they know you are hiking. I didn’t know this until after my hike, but I definitely recommend ensuring they know you are hiking.

They also host free activities or games after dinner which can be a fun way to end your evening!

Relaxation

I never used the pool (beach girl here), but the pool area is right next to the dining area and is absolutely beautiful. If you are someone who prefers a pool, it’s conveniently overlooking the ocean so you can have the best of both worlds!

There are hammocks at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort, but they are ONLY for the beach-side rooms! However, there were plenty of lounge chairs on the beach for everyone!

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort Fiji Review As A Solo Traveler

Value for Money

This resort is one of the best options for solo travelers. The dorms were the best and I loved how they offered dinner with other solo travelers! Other resorts did not offer that perk. The food was the best here of the resorts I stayed as well! And it was consistently stated among other solo travelers as their favorite resort!

This was also the best beach of the resorts I stayed. The snorkeling was great here as well! Snorkel gear was included which was a nice perk for some great snorkeling off the beach.

Extra Charges

Some tours do cost extra, but the charges for the cave and village tours was reasonable! There is a fee to use credit cards for payments, but this fee follows you around Fiji! Blue Lagoon Beach Resort is not alone in charging the fee. So when checking out, if you pay for the meal plan and any tours with a credit card, it will incur a fee!

Overall this is a great value for the money and one of my favorite stays in Fiji!

Other Resorts To Consider

I know this is a Blue Lagoon Beach Resort Fiji review as a solo traveler, however, maybe you aren’t convinced or maybe it’s not available for your travel dates. So here are some other resorts to consider.

The Octopus Resort is a sister resort to Blue Lagoon Beach Resort. While I did not stay here, I saw the beach from the Ferry and it was beautiful! Octopus Resort does not offer a caves tour, but it would offer it’s own set of tours and activities. Since it is a sister resort, I’d imagine the food and experience is similar!

Best time to Visit Fiji as a Solo Traveler

I’m a fan of shoulder seasons and while I did go to Fiji on a shoulder season, it turns out I inadvertently planned my trip during New Zealand and Australia school holidays. However, this ended up being great and I got to meet plenty of people but it didn’t feel overly crowded.

End of September to early October when I was there was perfect! The weather was warm and the ocean was warm enough (though I usually prefer it warmer).

I was told by a local that Summer in the Yasawa Islands can be brutal, but any hot weather place in the Summer will be brutal. However, if you go somewhere you are reliant on fans and not air conditioning, it should be something to keep in mind. During my trip, I actually had moments where I’d need the light jacket I packed whether at night or sitting in the shade.

Fiji is a year round destination so you can’t go too wrong. I’d just suggest avoiding their hot Summer (and typhoon season) from November to April and consider school holidays of Australia and New Zealand if you want to avoid crowds. The busiest times in Fiji are July and August when Australia and New Zealand are on school holidays and want to escape the cold.

How to Get to Blue Lagoon Beach Resort

I chose the Awesome Adventures Ferry! If you are only staying at Blue Lagoon, you can book a round trip ticket. However, if you are planning to island hop Fiji, consider the Bula Pass! I bought the eight day pass which allowed me to island hop for the week!

Alternatively, Blue Lagoon Beach Resort offers other options including their own resort boat or a helicopter for various fees.

Who Should Not Book at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort

If you want the party vibe, this resort is not for you! I loved that it had everyone from solo travelers, couples and families and overall had more family friendly vibes! If you are looking for a party scene, this is not the resort for you!

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort Fiji Review As A Solo Traveler

I hope this Blue Lagoon Beach Resort Fiji review as a solo traveler was helpful. This was my favorite resort as a solo traveler. My favorite island was Kuata, but this island came in a close second and Blue Lagoon Beach Resort was my favorite resort!

There are room options from dorms to beach-side villas! It creates such a fun environment of solo travelers to families! It had a family friendly vibe, good food and sits on a beautiful beach!
