Delos and Rhenia Islands Boat Tour from Mykonos: Is It Worth It?
My friend and I booked a Delos and Rhenia Islands boat tour from Mykonos during our trip and it was absolutely worth it! Rhenia’s aqua colored waters were mesmerizing and the history of Delos is fascinating. Of course, there are some things worth keeping in mind.
In this Delos and Rhenia cruise review, I’ll share our experience, advise on what to consider, and help you decide if this tour is right for you.
Quick Overview: The Delos and Rhenia Islands Boat Tour from Mykonos
During our 3 days in Mykonos, my friend and I booked this Delos and Rhenia islands boat tour. This is one of the most popular day trips because Delos is a UNESCO site! Its history dates back to the 3rd millennium BC, making it a must do while in Mykonos.
The tour we did visited Rhenia island first and the color of the water there was the most beautiful aqua I had ever seen! We stayed there a while for swimming, relaxing, and eventually a meal. From there we headed to Delos where we paid an entry fee to the island and received a guided tour.
I’ll review our experience on this Delos and Rhenia cruise more in depth, let you know what you can expect, and if there are other tours better suited for your trip!

Getting There: Departure from Mykonos
My friend and I booked the tour with pick-up and drop-off included, but you can elect to just book the tour if you prefer. The meeting location is subject to change and you will be advised the day before.
We set sail from their usual location by Mykonos Port, which is located not too far north of Mykonos Town. If the shuttle isn’t available, it shouldn’t be difficult to organize a taxi to the meeting location.
Our shuttle picked us up from our hotel near Mykonos Town (one of the best areas to stay in Mykonos) and made the whole process smooth and easy. We were on the boat and settled in well before we set sail.

First Stop: Rhenia Island
Our first stop was Rhenia island and the first thing I noticed was the color of the sea here! It was mesmerizing and the most beautiful aqua I had ever seen! The island is not inhabited and the bay had quite a few other boats around as well.
This stop allows you to relax, swim, or snorkel if you want. Had the water and air temperature been warmer (tropical blooded here) then I might have considered it. A few people decided to swim, but my friend and I chose to relax and enjoy the views.
The only people on the island were those who swam from a boat. The island is not the draw. Rather the bay itself is beautiful and I still think about that bright aqua colored sea!
After people had time to swim who wanted to do so, they served us lunch. It was good, but nothing overly memorable other than that water color, which you can tell I’m not over.
On the Boat Between Stops
The day we did this tour happened to be very windy! The bay at Rhenia protected us a little, but it was still windy here. However, once we set sail for Delos, the wind was wild!
Thankfully I had a light windbreaker, but my friend and I piled on all our clothes and towels as the wind whipped across. I have a couple videos but no photo really offers proof of how windy this crossing was.
We did this on our last full day in Mykonos, but I do recommend scheduling important tours at the front end of your trip just in case of inclement weather. While Greece in summer isn’t likely to have issues, if you’re visiting in the shoulder season like I was (October), the weather can be a little more unpredictable.

Second Stop: Delos Island
While the wind for sail was crazy, Delos Island had none of it! Actually, it was HOT even on an October day. If you visit in the hot summer months, consider doing a tour that offers a reverse order like this one: Shared Mykonos Sail Cruise to Delos and Rhenia Islands.
We docked at Delos and were ushered to the ticket area where we had to pay an entrance fee that is not included with the tour. Once our group was through, a guide on the island met us and offered the history of this ancient place.
It’s incredible to walk on an island that used to be the epicenter back in the 3rd millennium BC! She led us through some of the ruins and after she finished, we had some free time to wander. My friend and I headed to the lion statues, which might be the most iconic photograph spot on Delos.
Tip: While the morning sail was cool but pleasant (except for the super windy passage), Delos was hot. I definitely recommend having water handy and a hat on as there is no shade on this island outside the ticketing area.
The Return to Mykonos
The return to Mykonos was easy and not as windy as the Rhenia to Delos leg. However, it did serve to cool us off from the heat we experienced on Delos, even in early October!

Is the Delos and Rhenia Cruise from Mykonos Worth It?
Yes, I really enjoyed this Delos and Rhenia cruise from Mykonos, and have no major complaints. The sailing experience was smooth other than the super windy passage from Rhenia to Delos. The food was decent, but not memorable. However, the sights more than made up the memories, which is what you’d want from a two island tour.
Delos is so fascinating and Rhenia’s water color is still something I think about! While I would love to have gone for a swim, the sea here doesn’t really warm up to a temperature I find appealing and the crowds of summer is something I find very unappealing! So ultimately, I’m happy to have experienced this tour in a cooler month.
Another Tour Option
This tour in reverse may actually be better since it would put you on Delos in the morning versus the hotter time of day. That is my only true critique, but it’s an easy fix as there are tours (like this one: Mykonos:Sail Cruise to Delos&Rhenia islands) that do Delos first. Just keep in mind that the Rhenia bay may be busier if you book this tour.
Whether you book this tour or one similar, I think a Delos and Rhenia islands boat tour from Mykonos is definitely one of the top things to Do in Mykonos!
Who this tour is best for:
- First-time Mykonos visitors
- People who want both history + a Mykonos boat tour experience
- Travelers who prefer relaxed sightseeing over partying
Who should skip it:
- Party-focused travelers
- Anyone sensitive to wind/boat movement
- People who struggle with heat or long walks (Delos)

Practical Tips Before You Book
While I loved this Delos and Rhenia islands boat tour from Mykonos, there are some things to consider before you book.
Mobility Issues
If you have mobility issues, this is not the tour for you. You may want to book a private experience to have more firsthand attention if your mobility is only slightly impaired or just sit this one out. While the boat is large, it’s not a huge cruise ship so you’ll want to ensure you can handle the instability.
The tour itself does not recommend people with mobility issues or wheelchairs to book.
Weather Variations
The weather variations I experienced in this one tour is somewhat laughable! I visited Mykonos in early October and overall the weather was very pleasant. However, it is more volatile than the summer months and some days may not offer beach weather.
If you visit in the shoulder months during spring or fall, I recommend being ready for various conditions. It was cooler in the morning, then windy on the sail. At Rhenia island the bay protected us from the wind a little (compared to the sail to Delos) and air temperature was warming up.
The passage to Delos was crazy windy and made it cold. My friend and I wrapped ourselves up in all our windbreakers and towels for this part of the journey. Then at Delos, we were stripped down to our swimsuit covers and needed water as we walked around the sunny and hot historical Delos island.
While the summer will probably not offer variations to this degree, it will be a hotter experience overall, so keep that in mind, especially for Delos.
Book for the First Part of Your Stay
While I failed to do this, I recommend booking this tour or any boat tour you really prioritize at the front end of your Mykonos itinerary. If the weather does get bad and makes sailing dangerous, they will cancel the tour. If you book early on your stay, you can more easily reschedule it.
What to Bring on the Delos and Rhenia Islands Boat Tour
My friend and I kept it simple by wearing our swimsuit and then clothes over it. Even though we didn’t end up swimming, I’m glad we gave ourselves the option. However, there is a bathroom on board if you choose to change on the boat.
Depending on the time of year, be prepared for wind and cooler temperatures. Bring a towel or rent one on board if that’s an option with your tour. Don’t forget things like sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen for a day on a boat!
Since there is a bathroom on board, you can bring a change of clothes and had we gone swimming, changing would have been a good idea!
For shoes, I just wore my go-to flip flops: Havaianas. They are so comfortable and my feet love being free. However, Delos island is very dusty and hot, and you may benefit from having closed-toe, comfortable shoes as well.
Lastly, be sure to bring any ID or documentation required by the tour.
- Swimsuit (or wear it under your clothes)
- Change of clothes
- Towel (or rent one on board)
- Windbreaker or light jacket
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Hat
- Water
- Flip flops or sandals
- Closed-toe shoes
- Money for the Delos entry fee
- Any ID or documentation required by the tour
Delos Entry Fee
The fee to enter Delos island is extra and will not be included in the tour. This is true of other tours as well, so it’s worth keeping in mind.
When you get to the island, there is a ticket area where you can pay. They also have restrooms and a gift shop, which is a nice reprieve on a hot day.
Booking
I booked this on GetYourGuide and booked with a transfer included. The Delos and Rhenia islands boat tour will cost over $100 and will not include the entrance fee to Delos. However, you will get lunch included and a stop at Rhenia island.
If you don’t have it in your budget, consider a cheaper tour that only stops at Delos island and the price may also include the entrance fee. This option is highly rated and while it doesn’t include a stop at Rhenia, it’s perfect if you just want to explore Delos: Mykonos Town: Archaeological Site of Delos Guided Day Trip.
Booking on GetYourGuide makes it easy to book and cancel should plans change.

FAQ
Is the Delos and Rhenia Islands boat tour from Mykonos worth it?
Absolutely! The Delos and Rhenia cruise is one of the top things to do in Mykonos. Between Rhenia’s stunning aqua waters and the fascinating ancient history of Delos, it’s a full and memorable day. I have no major complaints and would recommend it to most visitors.
Is the Delos entry fee included in the tour?
No, the Delos entry fee is not included in the tour price. You’ll pay it separately upon arrival at the island, so be sure to bring cash just in case.
Can you swim at Rhenia Island?
Yes! Rhenia is the swimming stop on this tour. The water is a stunning aqua color and very clear. Some guests also snorkel here. Just note that the water temperature can be cool, especially in the shoulder season months like October.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
Summer (June–August) is the most popular time, with warm water and reliable weather. However, it will be busier and hotter, particularly on Delos which has no shade. Shoulder season (May or September/October) offers smaller crowds and pleasant temperatures, though weather can be more unpredictable.
Is this tour suitable for people with mobility issues?
No, the tour operator does not recommend this tour for guests with mobility issues or wheelchair users. The boat requires some stability on your feet, and Delos island involves walking over uneven, dusty terrain.
Is the Delos and Rhenia cruise good for families with kids?
It can be, as long as children are comfortable on a boat and in the water. Keep in mind the windy sailing conditions that are possible, the heat on Delos, and the uneven terrain on the island. Additionally, the historical tour on Delos is not interactive and won’t be much fun for kids, but swimming at Rhenia can make up for it.
How long is the Delos and Rhenia cruise?
The cruise is about 6 hours and that does not include transfers, so plan accordingly.
My friend and I explored Mykonos Town that night, but we didn’t do any other tours or paid activities that day.
