The guide also did a good job including behind-the-scenes details or fun facts you’d never pick up from simply visiting the outside of the stadium. Even if you don’t follow NASCAR, it’s hard not to appreciate the scale of the Speedway once you’re inside it.

That said, it’s not for everyone. If you’re expecting a fast-paced thrill ride or a super interactive experience, the basic tour stays pretty chill. It’s more about the history, the facts, and the novelty of being inside this world-famous raceway.

For the price, the convenience, and the chance to stand on and learn about one of the most iconic racetracks in the world, the Daytona Speedway basic tour is absolutely worth it — even for non-race fans. It’s a fun, accessible experience that adds something different to any Daytona Beach itinerary.

How Long Is the Daytona Speedway Tour?

The Daytona Speedway basic tour is about an hour and mine stuck very close to that time frame. From 9:30AM to 3PM, they run tours every half hour. However, I do recommend checking the site as if there are events happening, it could affect the tour offerings.

Wait Time

I did not experience any significant wait time, but it was a Friday in November. If you choose a busier time or a weekend day, you may want to pre-book the tour time you want. I simply showed up and was put on the next tour that happened to be in 10 minutes. My tour was full, but I noticed the tram tour behind us had only two people!

Museum

The museum has a lot to see, but how long you spend is really up to you and your level of interest. Some from our tour didn’t spend any time, while others really enjoyed walking through it. I spent about 30 minutes and enjoyed seeing the old race cars and the history of Daytona!

During the week will generally be less busy than the weekend. Be sure they are running tours if there is an event going on, as bike week and races can impact the tours.

If you visit during the summer, the mornings will be better. Not only will it be cooler, but the afternoon will typically bring thunderstorms and they cancel if there is lightning (and they only provide rain checks not refunds).

Of course, always check the weather the day of and even right before you book the tickets. I’ve checked the weather in the morning, only for it to be different two hours later. The thunderstorms can really surprise you!

In the months from September to April, you’ll rarely encounter thunderstorms and the weather is more agreeable overall. These months, I still recommend checking the weather, but you’ll have a lot more of the day at your disposal.

Tram Experience and What to Bring

Here’s what to expect on the Daytona Speedway tour when it comes to the tram. The tram is open air with a cover offering shade, but you can get plenty of sun still! It’s pulled behind a truck and you’ll sit on bench seats. Most of the seats face forward, but there are seats that face to the back.

The ride can be bumpy in parts, so I recommend having your items secured. You don’t need much, but losing a water bottle is easier than you think! However, the tour guide did offer to stop or even to have someone grab the item for you, should it fly off the tram!

Photography and Videography

The tram does make stops, but not as many as you’d think. This makes taking video rough! Photography can be easier, but expect to have a harder time with all the bumps.

Additionally, you will hear the guide through speakers so don’t expect a quiet ride.

Accessibility

I am not sure if they have a way to make it more accessible, but what I experienced wasn’t accessible if you have mobility issues. Stepping up into the tram is a relatively large step (and I’m saying that at 5’9). Most people didn’t have too much issue as there are ways to hold on and help you up. The lady in my row actually turned around and treated it like a ladder to get off the tram!

Overall, the basic tour I did was not very accessible. It’s possible they have something on offer, but for the tour I did, you’ll want to be able to handle a large step going up and down.

Where to Park

I actually didn’t quite know where I’d be parking, but it ended up being super easy. There was parking in front of the main entrance and I had no issues finding a spot! I followed Google maps to the Daytona Speedway and it led me right to the front entrance and the associated parking.

Race fans will definitely enjoy the tour the most, but I think it’s a great activity for most people visiting Daytona Beach. The tour is full of interesting facts about the speedway and the history of Daytona, so I actually found it to be a very fun activity!

There were no kids on our tour, so I didn’t have a chance to view how a kid would enjoy it. The tram could be fun and most kids would enjoy the ride aspect. If the child is a race fan, I think they’d enjoy it more.

Overall, I think kids would enjoy it, if for no other reason than the ride on the tram. The tour only stops a couple times, so it keeps moving which is good for kids. However, the scenery doesn’t change much, so some kids might become bored.

You can book online or simply book at the ticket office on site, which is what I did. Booking in advance on their website is good if you are visiting during a busy time and want to ensure you get on a specific tour.

They will remove the option to pre-book a tour if the weather predictions aren’t favorable. This is helpful, so consider checking their site even if you plan to book at the ticket office.

They do not accept cash, so make sure you have a cashless payment option with you.

If there is lightning or a cancellation they will offer rain checks, but no refunds according to their site. This is why checking the weather is important, especially if you are visiting and may not have a chance to use a rain check!
