Mykonos Greece | Travel Guide

Mykonos is one of the most visited Greek Islands! It’s known for its party scene and beaches. I spent about four days total in Mykonos exploring the island and all it has to offer!

When to Go to Mykonos Greece

The swarms of people who flock here every year can put a damper on the experience. That is why I always recommend shoulder seasons. I recommend April, May, September or October as a great time to visit. I go into more examples as to why on my Greece Travel Tips post, but less crowds and lower prices are the main reasons! High season is June through August, so you will get more crowds and higher prices during those months.

How Long to Stay in Mykonos Greece

I explored Mykonos for three days and it was the perfect amount of time for me to explore the island at a relaxed but fun pace! Ultimately it would depend on how much you want to see and how much you want to simply relax. I’m more of a traveler than vacationer, but I did have a fourth day when I stayed on the beach before we flew out early the next day and that day was for chilling. Overall I was never rushed and I left feeling as though I really got to see and experience Mykonos!

Mykonos Greece | Things To Do

Explore Mykonos Town

My friend and I spent a lot of time in Mykonos Town because we stayed within walking distance! Spent every dinner in this area, walked the charming streets, and did some shopping. Also check out the windmills and visit the area known as Little Venice! And don’t forget to snap some photos!

ATV Around the Island

I rented an ATV in Santorini and did the same in Mykonos! It’s a fun way to get around and explore the island! I visited various beaches and stopped at a lighthouse. Oh and the farm I stopped at will get its own mention!

Visit an Organic Farm

I found this farm on google maps and I ending up loving this visit! They offer a tour or you can walk around, but the farm is small! However, I had the best halva dessert there and enjoyed the whole charm of this cute little farm.

Day Trip to Delos & Rhenia

I really loved this day trip! Since it was end of September, the sail was very windy and cold, but so incredibly beautiful! The color of the water in Rhenia was rich and strikingly beautiful! Some people did swim, but since I was cold dry, I elected not to get wet.

After Rhenia, we went to Delos. This ancient destination is fascinating! And when I say ancient, I mean dates back to the third millennium B.C.! Though I had been cold on the sail to Rhenia, it was hot on the island, so I can’t imagine how hot it would be in July or August. We were given insight into the history before given free time to walk around. Anyway, this was a highlight and I definitely recommend this tour!

Relax on a Beach

For this trip, my friend and I started in Mykonos, went to Tinos for a few nights, then returned to Mykonos for a night before flying to Cyprus. For this night back in Mykonos, I booked a place on the beach. (And because it was the shoulder season I only paid 110 USD versus 350USD for high season). While this was supposed to be relaxing on the beach, it happened to be a rainy day.

So the relaxing was done indoors and I actually took one of those naps you wake up feeling like a train hit you. I guess jetlag caught up to me. Once the rain subsided, I did get to enjoy the beach a bit and also went on a walk which I really enjoyed!

I recommend staying close to Mykonos Town unless you are looking to really relax and chill. So if you don’t stay on the beach during your stay, you can enjoy visiting a beach club for a day.

Sunset from a Restaurant in Little Venice

One of the top recommended sunset spots is Little Venice. I tried to see the sunset over dinner, but didn’t plan ahead appropriately. So the sunset shots I got, were when I quickly went to the restaurant’s veranda for a second (when guests had just left) to snap a photo. It’s beautiful and worth planning ahead to reserve a good view for dinner!

Weather in Mykonos

The weather in Mykonos follows a typical, but loose four seasons, with the cooler months being mild. July and August are the hottest (and most crowded)! This is when Europe is looking for a beach vacation!

The weather still had cooler mornings and evenings (by my standards) end of September when I was there, but warmed up beautifully during the day. It did rain on my relaxing day, but overall the trip was not negatively impacted by rain.

Spring and Fall (shoulder season) in general are good times to visit, but the earlier or later you arrive, the less restaurants and shops might be open. This is because people leave during Winter before returning to the island for tourist season.

Winter here is mild, but is cold for beach days.

How to Get Around

It’s a small island, so you can rely on taxis or utilize the public transport. My friend and I used taxis for airport and port pickup and drop-offs. For ultimate freedom, rent a car or ATV and explore the island at your own pace! If you do tours, most offer hotel pickup so on those days, there is little concern on how to get around.
