I’ve traveled to Fiji solo and was shocked by how much I loved it and how easy (and not awkward) it was to travel solo!
There are over 300 islands spread out in the Pacific Ocean that make up Fiji! While most require sailing, there are some that have a great tourist structure that makes exploring easy! Whether you’re looking at the main island, the garden island or chains of islands perfect for island hopping, Fiji has something for every type of traveler, including solo!

Why Fiji is Perfect for Solo Travelers
Safety in Fiji
When traveling safety is a concern whether at the front or back of your mind. And if you’re a woman, you are probably wondering is Fiji safe for solo female travellers? Overall, the answer is yes!
While I think the US travel advisory site can sometimes instill unnecessary fear for some destinations, it ranks Fiji as a 1 of 4 where you are told to exercise normal precautions.
I felt safe in Fiji, though I was more alert on the main island! In the Yasawa Islands that are more built around tourism and where locals enjoy a slower and simpler way of life, I felt very relaxed!

Hospitality in Fiji
Fijians are very welcoming and kind! I found the Fijians in the village of the Yasawa Islands to seem the most happy! Maybe it’s their simpler way of life or perhaps they have a tighter community, but they seemed genuinely happy.
Then at every single resort, you will be greeted and sent off with a song! So wholesome and something I loved with every arrival and departure.
Overall, they are very welcoming and I felt like they genuinely wanted you to experience their beautiful country in the best way!

Diverse Experiences
Though Fiji is a tropical destination, there are so many adventures to be had! I explored the Sawa i Lau caves, saw a manta ray and did a bull shark dive in Fiji! Snorkeling was good at each resort I stayed and I did beginner surf lessons in Fiji!
When you come to paradise, relaxing is usually part of your agenda and Fiji offers plenty of opportunities for that as well! It’s one of the best destinations I’ve been to that felt like it had a great balance of adventure and chill.
Space Created for Solo Travelers
It’s easy to see tropical destinations as being for couples and families and solo travel is far less common in the Caribbean than the South Pacific. At least based on my research and experience up to this point, but hopefully that will start to change.
Fiji has so many options and opportunities for solo travel! It was absolutely wonderful and something I was not expecting! And I think one of the best solo travel spots in Fiji is the Yasawa Islands where some resorts offered dorm rooms which created a space for solo travelers whether you stay in the dorms or not!

Viti Levu | Fiji’s Main Island
Fiji’s main island is an island you will spend some time on unless you arriving in Fiji by boat. For some, Viti Levu will be the bulk of a trip to Fiji, but unless you are on a tight budget, I recommend the outer islands more! However, since this is the main island and it’s so large, there are plenty of adventures you can have here!
On Viti Levu, solo travelers will have to stay in a hostel to save money. I did stay at a cheap resort, but I can tell they weren’t used to solo travelers staying there. Unlike in the Yasawa Islands, it seems as though there are resorts or dorms, but the two do not mix.

Nadi, Viti Levu
Most (if not, all) international flights will arrive in Nadi! While I did spend my first day and night in Fiji here, I can’t, with any conviction, say I think it’s worth it. However, I am glad I spent a night here to recover from the long flight!
What to Do in Nadi
If you do find yourself in Nadi for a day or two, there are some things to do. Visit downtown Nadi to see and walk around, visit the Hindi temple, and the market. You can also visit the geothermal mud pools at Sabeto Hot Springs.

Using Nadi as Your Base
Of course, you can base yourself in Nadi as a lot of day tours are offered from here! These include zip lining, river tubing, or day trips to Mamanuca Islands!
This setup could be ideal for some solo travelers to Fiji for part or all of their trip.

Where to Stay in Nadi
I chose to stay at a cheap hotel for my one night in Nadi. However, there are hostels that offer dorms and private rooms. There are plenty of options to choose from in Nadi for various solo traveler budgets!
Overall, unless you are paying a lot for a hotel, I’d keep your expectations low. I stayed at Aquarius On The Beach for my first day and night in Fiji. It’s ranked fifth for Nadi hotels on TripAdvisor based on customer reviews and I’m really shocked by that fact!
It was run down and the beach wasn’t great. The best photo I have from my time there was a sunset photo. Now it didn’t cost much and the employees were very nice! My time there was mainly to rest and prepare for the island hopping Fiji part of my trip, but it wasn’t nice.

Coral Coast, Viti Levu
When I was doing my research of Fiji, the Coral Coast was continuously mentioned as the best beaches on the main island! It was also listed as a great spot for beginner surf lessons in Fiji!
Since I did want to take surf lessons, I ended my trip in Fiji by staying on the Coral Coast! I chose Natadola Beach, but this coast is large so there are plenty of options of to choose from!
Natadola Beach
I can vouch for the fact that this beach is absolutely beautiful!
I stayed at Yatule, but there are only two resorts on Natadola Beach. The other resort, InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort, is the better option!
I could tell Yatule wasn’t used to seeing solo travelers. If you want to be around other solo travelers or you just want to stay somewhere you don’t feel as out of place, consider staying at a hostel and not a resort.
What to Do in Coral Coast
You can easily make the Coral Coast your base for your solo vacation in Fiji! While staying here I explored Sigatoka Town and Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park. I also took a day trip to a Mamanuca Island and I took some beginner surf lessons in Fiji!

Where to Stay on the Coral Coast
There are plenty of options of places to stay along the Coral Coast. It’s worth noting that the Coral Coast is quite a drive from Nadi, so keep that in mind if you choose an accommodation further south.
Also, if you want to ensure you are not the only solo traveler then you’ll definitely want to stay at a hostel on the main island in general.

Taveuni | Fiji’s Garden Island
If I ever make it back to Fiji, I would definitely add Taveuni to my itinerary! It’s said to be a lush island full of waterfalls, beautiful reefs and tropical rainforests!
In terms of island hopping here, it’s fairly easy to get here! There is a cheap ferry option from the main island, and while it looks to be very easy on your budget, it will take a chunk of time out of your vacation! So I’d recommend just grabbing a flight here!
What to Do in Taveuni
Scuba diving and exploring the beautiful reefs up here is highly recommended! Definitely ignore TLC and chase some waterfalls! And plan to explore this third largest island in Fiji by doing a hike or two.

Mamanuca Islands
The easiest chain of islands in Fiji to island hop and explore are the Mamanuca Islands and these are one of the best solo travel spots in Fiji! They sit close to the main island and are easy to see with day trips from Port Denarau in Nadi.

If you are a surfer, you already know about the Mamanuca Islands. Some of the best waves in the world are in the Mamanuca Islands.
There are also beach clubs you can spend a day on relaxing and plenty of day trips or sailing day trips in the Mamanuca Islands.

Where to Stay in the Mamanuca Islands
The Mamanuca Islands are very popular due to their proximity to the main island of Viti Levu. There are luxury options, surf resorts and mid to low end resorts that offer dorms.
For the best solo travel spots in Fiji, I recommend resorts that have dorms as an option. Unless of course you are planning on a luxury stay! The reason I recommend resorts with dorm options, is you won’t be the only solo traveler regardless of the room type you choose.

Yasawa Islands | My Top Pick for Best Solo Travel Spots in Fiji
The second easiest chain of islands for Fiji island hopping are the Yasawa Islands! They sit above the Mamanuca Islands and have daily ferry service. These islands I think are some of the best solo travel spots in Fiji!
I absolutely loved my time in the Yasawa Islands and had I only stayed on the main island of Fiji, I wouldn’t have left feeling the same love for Fiji! The Yasawa Islands were easily the best part of my solo trip to Fiji!
What to Do in the Yasawa Islands
When I was planning my trip to the Yasawa Islands of Fiji, I chose each of the resorts I stayed at with an activity in mind! I wanted to see the Blue Lagoon Caves in Fiji also known as the Sawa-i-Lau Caves, see the manta rays and dive with bull sharks!
In addition, every resort seems to offer snorkeling, scuba diving, and village visits to meet the locals and see their way of life! And of course, relaxing is easy and entering “Fiji time” felt the most natural in the Yasawa Islands!
Why I Think the Yasawa Islands are Best for Solo Travelers
Why I think this is the best of the solo travel spots in Fiji is the whole tourism of the Yasawa Islands felt like it was for everyone! Whether you are a family, a couple, friend group, or a solo traveler, we all enjoyed our time in the Yasawa Islands and I never felt out of place as a solo traveler!
When I first got onto the Yasawa Islands ferry, I met a teacher from New Zealand on school holiday who was in Fiji to snorkel while her husband was at home! At each of the three resorts I stayed, I met solo travelers and not all of the solo travelers stayed in dorms!
With it being so common for solo travelers to visit the Yasawa Islands, there are better resort options here that offer dorms than there are in the Mamanuca Islands. So the overall experience when you’re on a budget feels nicer.
Expectation versus Reality
Overall, I can’t say enough good things about the Yasawa Islands, but like anywhere it’s good to have realistic expectations! For me, I didn’t go with super high expectations. Since I chose to stay in the dorms, I definitely had lower expectations than if I was to spend a lot of money for accommodations.
I also went to Fiji wondering if it was really going to be worth the long journey to get there from Florida. Yet in the end, I absolutely loved it and I’m so grateful I got to experience Fiji! Of course for me, it was the Yasawa Islands that I loved the most and would skip the main island entirely next time!
Where to Stay in the Yasawa Islands
Similar to the Mamanuca Islands, the Yasawa Islands have plenty of options to choose from! However, I do think they have more mid-range options and better dorm options!
There are no surfing spots in the Yasawa Islands that I know of, but there are more diverse activity options! If there is something you really want to experience, that is a great way to narrow down your options!
If you want Luxury, there are less to choose from in the Yasawa Islands than in the Mamanuca Islands, but they are highly rated!
For the cheapest and most budget friendly option, there are homestays in the Yasawa Islands! With this option you can stay with a local family in a village!
A lot of resorts in the Yasawa Islands offer dorms, and even if you don’t want to stay in a dorm, you can rest assured you won’t be the only solo traveler at those resorts! For example, at Blue Lagoon they offer to sit solo travelers together for dinner. I met solo travelers staying in private rooms and someone was staying in a beachside villa!
Even if you don’t want to stay in a dorm, resorts that have that as an option are a great place to consider if you want other solo travelers around!

This is not an exhaustive list, but it’s a good place to start if you are wanting a resort with a dorm option. These are some of the most commonly stayed at resorts with dorms. Again, you don’t have to stay in a dorm, but it practically guarantees you won’t be the only solo traveler there!

Worth Noting for Mid-Range Resorts in the Yasawa Islands
Dining plans are compulsory and you are required to pay on arrival. It’s worth noting for budget purposes especially.
Each resort charges different amounts per day for three meals a day. Blue Lagoon charged the most of the three I stayed but also had the best food!

What to Pack for a Solo Trip to Fiji
I have an entire post dedicated to a Fiji packing list, but there are a couple things I will highlight in this solo travel guide. If you’re going to the Yasawa Islands, do NOT forget the bug spray! I was covered in mosquito bites.
Additionally, I recommend reef safe sunscreen to help protect the beautiful reefs you will encounter during your solo holiday in Fiji! Since I packed a carry-on for my solo trip to Fiji, I bought both sunscreen and bug spray on arrival in Nadi.
The last thing to note is while Fiji is a tropical destination, if you go during the dryer and cooler months, you may want a light jacket for the evenings! When I went end of September into early October, it was cooler in the evenings and even in the shade during the day!

Tips for Solo Travel in Fiji
Staying Connected While Traveling Solo in Fiji
The wifi is not great, but I don’t go places so I can be on my phone. However, when traveling solo it’s good to check in with friends and family! The wifi at every resort I stayed was only available in one area. For two of the three that was the dining area and for Mantaray it was the beachside bar area.
Blue Lagoon’s wifi stayed decent whenever I was in the dining area. However, Mantaray’s wifi was only usable in the morning when there were very few people around. And Barefoot Kuata’s wifi was also slower during the day when more people were around.
Lastly on the main island at Yatule, wifi was decent all day! However, it is also only available in the dining and lobby areas!
I really like being forced to disconnect from my phone while having it available to check in with family and friends so they know I’m safe. It felt like a great balance and I think really added to the whole experience while in Fiji!
Meeting People While Traveling Solo in Fiji
Accommodation Selection
The easiest way to meet people is to choose the best solo travel spots in Fiji! Basically, the accommodations you book will have the greatest impact on meeting people.
At Blue Lagoon, I loved that they offered to sit solo travelers together at dinner! It was the easiest way to meet other solo travelers and made dinner so much more fun! I did not stay at Octopus Resort, but they are a sister resort to Blue Lagoon and might offer the same at dinner.
In general, if you stay at a resort that offers dorms, it will be easier to meet other solo travelers! On the main island of Viti Levu, I think staying at a hostel will be the easiest option for meeting other solo travelers in Fiji.
Group Tours and Activities
However, regardless of where you stay, you will meet people on tours! I also met people on the ferry ride and saw some of them multiple times throughout my stay in Fiji!
While resorts with dorms in the Yasawa Islands or a hostel on the main island are the easiest ways to meet people during your stay, there are other opportunities to meet people. Just say “hello” and you may be surprised how easy it can be! And this is coming from someone who is more of an introvert!

Is Fiji a good place for singles?
Yes! I absolutely LOVED my time in Fiji! For tropical destinations that are common honeymoon spots, it’s easy to wonder how you would feel traveling solo and single.
The only time in Fiji I felt very single and solo was on the main island when staying at Yatule. I don’t think they were used to solo travelers whatsoever.
On the Yasawa Islands I never had an issue and never felt awkward! It was easy to meet other travelers and other solo travelers! I think the Yasawa Islands are a great destination if you want some time in paradise and don’t want to feel like your relationship status is slapping you in the face because you’re surrounded by couples.
What are the easiest places outside the US for a woman to visit as a beginner solo traveller?
There are plenty of great options for a solo trip! Most will depend on your comfort level and budget. Europe is generally quite easy, and depending where you choose it can also be budget friendly!
I loved Fiji as a solo destination! All Fijians speak English so there is no language barrier either! Australia and New Zealand are English speaking epic destinations and great for solo travel as well.
If you want to start with an option closer to home, consider Canada or an island in Caribbean like Barbados to just get your feet wet with solo travel.
I’ve traveled to Mexico and Panama solo with no issues and I don’t speak Spanish. However, if a destination makes you nervous, save it for later and pick somewhere you feel more at ease for your first trip!
Where did you go on your first solo trip and how was the experience?
My first fully solo trip, meaning there was no one in the country I knew was Tulum, Mexico. Overall, my expectations of Tulum were not met and it was just okay. As a solo traveler though, I felt fine and had no issues getting the bus to Tulum or riding a bike around Tulum.
I’ve also done Panama and the San Blas Islands for a long weekend and I LOVED that trip! Fiji was the longest trip I’ve done solo and is easily my MOST favorite solo trip!
