What to Do in Sydney, Australia: 13+ Things Great for First-Time Visitors

There is so much on offer when considering what to do in Sydney! This big Australian city is one of my absolute favorite cities I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. The weather is beautiful with hot summers and mild winters and locals like to say it’s “beautiful one day and perfect the next.”

It has a famous harbor, it’s on the ocean, and knowing I’m a beach girl, it’s no surprise why I love it! Combine time in the city with the some great day trips and Sydney can really deliver as part of your Australia itinerary.

Things to Do in Sydney

Sydney is one of my favorite cities and yes, I love it more than Melbourne. To be fair, the weather is better suited to me and I’ve been to Sydney numerous times while I have visited Melbourne only once so far.

Sydney’s ranking as the largest city in Australia based on population is being contested by Melbourne, but the final jury is still out. Seems like they are struggling to define the terms. Regardless, those beautiful sunny days with harbour views or breakfast in Bondi mornings are unmatched, in my opinion.

So here’s some of my favorite things to do in Sydney.

Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge

One of my most favorite things I’ve ever done in a city was climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. They give you a full safety briefing and outfit you in a grey jumpsuit with a belt. When it comes time to climb the bridge, you clip onto the bridge for extra caution.

However, you are never fully exposed on the climb and will have railings on both sides. The steps are not that steep either and you climb at an easy pace. This is absolutely worth doing if you have the ability, time and budget!

I still remember meeting a mother and child from Melbourne and hearing them sing “it’s my life, it’s now or never” as they climb with so much joy and passion. Of course, I am not afraid of heights and it’s easily the coolest way to get views of city I’ve ever experienced!

BridgeClimb

Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is the most iconic building in Sydney and perhaps all of Australia! It sits in the beautiful harbour and whether you plan to go inside or attend any events, it’s worth catching a glimpse of this beautiful structure from every angle available.

I’ve actually never gone inside in all my visits to Sydney, so I can’t confirm whether that is worth it or not. However, visiting the area is free, which I’ve done countless times and the views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge behind the Opera House are worth experiencing.

Royal Botanic Gardens

Next to the Opera house is the Royal Botanic Gardens. Take a stroll or have a picnic in the gardens overlooking the harbour if the weather is nice.

The gardens by themselves are less of a draw as the setting is the real highlight. So if you’re into gardens, the Melbourne one might be a better fit. However, it’s super easy to walk here from the Opera House, so definitely add it to your day.

Taronga Zoo

Taronga Zoo Sydney is one of Sydney’s most popular wildlife attractions, with an impressive collection of Australian and international animals. The setting is a big part of the experience, with many areas offering spectacular views across Sydney Harbour toward the Opera House and city skyline.

I have never visited the zoo during any of my trips, but it would be a great family-friendly activity! You can reach the zoo by a scenic ferry ride from Circular Quay (near the Opera House), making the journey there part of the attraction.

Bondi Beach

Visit the iconic Bondi Beach. Enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk, have brunch at a cute cafe overlooking the beach, or visit the shops.

Channel some local energy and take a surf lesson, have a swim at the iconic ocean pool, or get in some exercise along the boardwalk!

The train takes you to Bondi Junction which is great for shopping. You can walk to Bondi Beach if you’re up for a longer stroll, but my friends and I took the bus from the station and it was simple.

Bondi Beach also has cute shops and good restaurants. I remember eating at a breakfast place and asking the waitress for water, not knowing the Aussie way was a self serve water station. Well, she was an American and brought us water with lemons and yes, we gave her an American size tip as well.

The breakfast was delicious and fresh as well, but I can’t remember the name. It wasn’t on the beach facing road, and if you have limited time, maybe start there so you can enjoy the views.

Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk

I’ve done only a portion of this walk, but if you wanted to venture further from the Bondi Beach boardwalk, this is the way to go! It’s a 6-kilometre route that follows the cliffs between Coogee and Bondi, passing beautiful beaches, ocean pools, parks and viewpoints along the way.

You can easily stop for a swim or something to eat along the route. Allow around two hours if walking at a good pace, although you’ll probably want longer to enjoy the beaches and scenery.

Darling Harbour

Darling Harbour is a lively waterfront precinct in the heart of Sydney, with restaurants, attractions, green spaces and a pedestrian promenade along the water. It’s a good place to wander in the afternoon, grab a meal or drink, and enjoy the harbour atmosphere, especially in the evening when the area comes alive.

Several major attractions, including the Australian National Maritime Museum and SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, are also located here.

SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium

Take a few hours and visit the Aquarium. There is something very “finding nemo” about vising the SEA LIFE Aquarium in Darling Harbour. If you want even more of an adventure, you can dive with sharks at the aquarium.

My friends and I visited on one of my trips and enjoyed it! It’s kind of hard for aquariums to compete with Sea World (the theme park aquarium I grew up visiting), so I don’t frequent them often. However, the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium was great and the Finding Nemo movie certainly enhances the experience as the cartoon setting has come to life.

Luna Park

For a fun change of pace, head to Luna Park, a historic amusement park overlooking Sydney Harbour. You can ride the Ferris wheel, enjoy classic carnival rides and take in views of the harbour and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

I’ve never done this, but I can see it being especially appealing for families, although adults can enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere and waterfront setting too.

Manly Beach

Take the ferry over to Manly Beach for a few hours. It’s a fun experience because you also get to enjoy the Harbour in the journey.

Once you’re there you can walk around, shop, watch the surfers or grab a bite to eat.

I have fond memories of buying of surf t-shirt in the shops and getting pooped on by a bird when getting off the ferry. Okay, maybe the second isn’t a fond experience, but I certainly haven’t forgotten it.

The Rocks

This area of Sydney has some shops, restaurants, charm and history. If you are here on the weekend, check out the market!

Also, if you are doing the BridgeClimb you’ll start and end in this area, so it’s an easy add-on to your day! However, it’s not far from the Opera House making it accessible on any day you’re strolling around.

I’ve been many times and bought a souvenir in one of the shops. One trip we enjoyed Pancakes On The Rocks, which is an Aussie diner type of place. I enjoyed the pancakes, but I got away with sweet, carb heavy meals back then.

Book a tour, enjoy a meal, or simply stroll around this historical area.

Art Gallery of New South Wales

The Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of Sydney’s major cultural attractions and a good option if you want a break from the outdoors. The collection includes Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, European and Asian art, with both permanent collections and changing exhibitions.

While I haven’t done this, it’s definitely a worthwhile consideration or your time in Sydney. Best of all, general admission is free, making it a great activity that’s easy on your wallet.

Cruise the Sydney Harbour

If you don’t have time for Manly Beach, have another reason to take a ferry, or just want to experience more of the Sydney Harbour, consider some kind of a boat tour!

The harbour is such a star of Sydney so experience it as much as possible! I’ve only ever used a ferry to see another part of Sydney, but a boat tour certainly offers a unique and special experience.

Sydney Tower

Sydney Tower Eye is the highest point in Sydney, offering panoramic views across the city from its observation deck. On a clear day, you can see the harbour, coastline, Blue Mountains and Sydney skyline from above.

You can also make a meal out of the experience, with several restaurants and bars in Sydney Tower offering spectacular views.

I got my views from the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb, but if that isn’t for you, the Sydney Tower is a great option for getting a bird’s eye view.

Sydney Tours if You’re Short on Time

If you are short on time for Sydney, check out some of the below options. While I love Sydney, Australia is full of natural wonders to explore and a city might be low priority for you on your Australia itinerary.

Of course, this city on the water has a beauty worth taking in even if it’s only half a day!

Three Sisters, Blue Mountains, what to do in Sydney

Day Trips from Sydney

If you have more time for Sydney, then you might want to include some surrounding areas! From the Blue Mountains, to vineyards and National Parks, there are plenty of options surrounding Sydney!

Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are beautiful and close to Sydney. This is one of the most popular day trips and for good reason! Trade out ocean views for mountains and marvel at The Three Sisters or explore caves.

I visited the Three Sisters with my sisters and there is a scenic train you can ride as well. It’s quite steep and might not be for everyone, but it’s a fun experience if it doesn’t stress you out.

The caves are a bit further than The Three Sisters, but I did them on one trip and they blew me away! Just be sure there are no road closures before setting out.

You can get here by booking a tour, renting a car, or taking a train and bus! It’s very easy to add on to your Sydney itinerary and a worthwhile break from city life.

South of Sydney: Coastal Day Trips

I did a road trip of the east coast of Australia, and while I couldn’t stop everywhere, I saw a lot of this vast country. Jervis Bay was one stop, and I remember the drive south of Sydney being quite beautiful.

Of course, you don’t have to rent a car if you don’t want to, simply book a tour and let someone take care of the details.

Head south of Sydney for the Royal National Park, Sea Cliff Bridge, Jervis Bay, or Macquarie Pass National Park! These are all within a day trip distance from Sydney and are great when you’re considering what to do in New South Wales in general!

Hunter Valley

If you love wine, then Hunter Valley is something to consider while in Sydney! Rent a car or pick a tour and explore Australia’s oldest wine region.

I haven’t been, but my sister lives in Australia and has visited. She enjoys this area and isn’t a big drinker, so everyone could potentially enjoy this day trip and if you have a designated driver you can save some money by renting a car.

Weather in Sydney

In my perusing the internet I came across a very reputable travel site claiming Sydney is 80F in their Summer. I’ve been to Sydney in March, their fall season, and that is more accurate temperature to what I experienced. I live in central Florida and I’d compare our weather to Sydney’s, meaning the summers are hot and the winters are mild.

I took my research to the next level and checked January’s weather (their summer) in Sydney for this year. While they had some days in the 80s they also reached days over 100F! Being on the water might keep temperatures more mild at times, but I’d still plan for hot weather if you go in the Summer. The sunshine will keep you warmer any time of year and you will need a jacket in the winter months especially on cloudy days, though not a thick one!

How to Get Around

Driving in Sydney is possible, but with parking rates, you are better off not driving. If you are splitting taxis or Uber rides, it could be cost effective and easy for getting around.

However, in Sydney, it is very easy to get around on public transport. I mainly relied on the train system, but did take a bus for Bondi Beach and a Ferry for Manly Beach. Once you’re by the harbour, a ferry is an easy option. I enjoy wandering city streets and Sydney is very walkable for a lot of its main attractions.

Where to Stay

There are plenty of options in Sydney for every type of traveler! Whether you’re a family of four, a couple, group of friends or you’re taking in this beautiful city solo, there’s a perfect place for you!

Final Thoughts on What to Do in Sydney

Warm weather cities on the water always seem to win my heart and Sydney is no exception! I absolutely love this city and it’s such a great gateway to the rest of this vast and diverse country.

Breakfast at Bondi Beach, shopping at Manly, a Sydney Harbour Bridge climb and taking a day trip can all make for an unforgettable time in this Australia city.
