Overview of Barbados by Regions
When deciding the best area in Barbados to stay for your next vacation, you’ll want to consider beaches, activities close by, restaurants, and types of accommodations. If you decide on an all-inclusive hotel, then the beach may be your only real concern, but if you plan to enjoy the island then other factors will matter!
I know I’m partial, but I absolutely think Barbados is worth visiting! It has gorgeous beaches, friendly locals, and a good variety in terms of coastline for what is actually a small (14 miles by 21 miles) island.
Let’s review each region in Barbados, characteristics of the beaches, and any top restaurants nearby. This can help you determine what will be the best area in Barbados for you!

West Coast | Calm Sea & Watersports
When considering the best area in Barbados, the west coast is very popular for vacationers! There are plenty of upscale resorts and the ocean tends to be calm. While there are rarely waves on this coast, there are rocks making it important that you enter slowly to get a lay of the land.
Since the west coast of Barbados is a popular region to stay, there are plenty of restaurants as well as some cute shopping areas like Holetown Chattel Village.
In the northern area of the west coast, there is Folkestone Marine Park & Visitors’ Centre which is good for snorkeling. Or down on the southwest coast you can snorkel with sea turtles (though I recommend booking a catamaran cruise tour).
Since the west coast tends to be calm, this is the area of Barbados where water sports like jet skiing or parasailing are offered. It’s a great coast for paddle boarding as well!
Overall, the west coast is an excellent choice if you want good restaurants close by, calm waters, and plenty of upscale accommodation options!
Top Restaurants of the West Coast of Barbados
- Fish Pot – I went here with my sister and brother-in-law and enjoyed it! Also, it’s a great spot for sunset being right on the water!
- The Cliff – It has undergone renovations and a chef change in recent years. Regardless, The Cliff is still one of the top restaurants on the island. Again, it’s right on the water, great for sunset and a fine dining experience!
- The Tides Barbados – Another high rated fine dining restaurant is Tides. It’s also on the beach and you already know the sunset is a great time to make a reservation!
- Sea Shed – A more casual spot on the west coast, but it has great reviews. It also has views of the water, making it a great option for lunch or dinner!
- Nishi Restaurant – If you’re looking for a good sushi restaurant, this one on the west coast is worth considering. It’s not on the beach, but some reviewers mention it’s a cozy ambience.
- The Caboose – If you’re looking for a delicious fish cutter (fish sandwich), head to Caboose. It’s an outdoor stand in Speightstown and worth a stop for a quick lunch!

South Coast | Clear & Calm to Clear & Currents
The south coast is probably my favorite! It’s relatively calm, but this is the coast I did some beginner surf lessons in Barbados and loved it! The south is also quite varied in terms of ocean conditions.
This is a great coast to base yourself for 7 days in Barbados. On the southwest end, it’s more calm, a bit more sheltered from the wind, and close to the action of Bridgetown.
On the southeast end, there are beaches with a lot of wind making them perfect for wind and kite surfing! The ocean here has stronger currents, but still swimmable for the most part if you’re familiar with the ocean. The Crane is my favorite and it’s on the southeast. It’s windier on this side and the sargassum seaweed does impact this portion of the south coast.
Overall, the south coast is popular for good reason! If you stay on the southwest side, there’s plenty of action around with relatively calm, clear waters. The southeastern side doesn’t have the calm waters, but it does have the WOW factor.
Note About Sargassum Seaweed
Sargassum seaweed is a natural phenomenon that affects the east coast from Florida to Barbados, and the patterns can vary significantly from year to year. It was all over Tulum when I visited and usually hits Florida during cooler months. One bonus to the seaweed issue on a Caribbean island is you can simply go to the west coast if it’s bad, which is not possible in places like Tulum.
In Barbados, the seaweed usually impacts the Atlantic facing (east and southeast) beaches like Crane Beach, Bottom Bay, and the Bathsheba. While southwest beaches tend to be more sheltered from heavy seaweed deposits, there have been unusually severe sargassum blooms. Seaweed presence is unpredictable and can change quickly with weather conditions, storms, and seasonal currents.
The west coast doesn’t really deal with the seaweed and usually the southwest is good, but there’s no guarantee. If the seaweed is bad, some resorts offer free transport to beaches on the west coast that are clear of seaweed! Of course, if the possibility of seaweed is a deal breaker, consider choosing the west coast.
Popular Beaches Along the South Coast
Since this coast is a bit more varied than the west coast, I’ll review specific beaches so you can decide the best area in Barbados to stay or visit! We’ll start on the southwest and work our way to the southeast.
Carlisle Bay – Located closer to Bridgetown and where people come to snorkel with sea turtles. Though I recommend booking a catamaran tour to really enjoy them!
Brandons Beach/Drill Hall Beach – Just around the bend from Carlisle Bay is Brandons Beach. A wide stretch of beach and a great spot for surfing.
Accra Beach – Ideal for family swimming, with many beach chairs and umbrellas available, plus beach bars, children’s playgrounds, toilets, and showers. It shows up as Rockley Beach on google maps, but I’ve always heard my family call it Accra. I’ve enjoyed the Tiki Bar with my family and solo and it’s a great spot to base yourself on Accra Beach.
Worthing Beach – Features calm waters ideal for children, with the popular Carib Beach bar and plenty of food and drink outlets.
Dover Beach – Another popular beach with clear, turquoise waters and soft, white sand, making it perfect for swimming and relaxation. It’s conveniently located in the heart of St. Lawrence Gap.
Miami Beach – Known for its breathtaking views from the short cliff above, with stunning water colors and many shades of blue.
Silver Sands Beach – Located on the southern edge of the island and renowned as a windsurfing and kitesurfing destination due to protected reefs and strong winds. It’s not a good swimming beach, but it is beautiful!
Foul Bay – An uncrowded beach renowned for its soft, powdery white sands, inviting turquoise waters, and dramatic cliffs, making it perfect for relaxation, and sunbathing. Seaweed does hit this beach at various times in the year.
Crane Beach – My favorite beach on the island because it was our family beach when we lived there. It’s often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, boasting a pink sand hue, dramatic cliffs, and turquoise waters. The ocean is swimmable, but not pleasant unless you’re willing and able to go past the break. The seaweed does hit this beach at various times of the year, but The Crane Hotel does try to keep the beach as clean as possible.
Bottom Bay – A beach on the southeast of Barbados worth visiting for its untouched beauty. While swimming might be tough here, it’s a stunning stretch of coastline!
Top Restaurants of the South Coast of Barbados

- Salt Cafe – Located in Hastings on the main road, this restaurant requires reservations and is known for excellent food.
- Buzo Osteria – Offering Italian cuisine with a Caribbean twist.
- Cuz’s Fish Stand – It doesn’t take much to make me happy when in Barbados. A good fish cutter (fish sandwich) or two will do and Cuz is legendary!
- Marco Polo Bar & Grill – A casual dining spot with a friendly local rum shop vibe in a beautiful setting.
- The Tiki Bar – I’ve been a couple times, the food is decent and it makes a great spot to eat and enjoy Accra Beach.

It is gorgeous though!
Upscale Hotels on the South Coast
The Crane Resort – A luxury resort in Barbados offering exceptional service, stunning views, and elegance. Set on Crane Beach, a beautiful pink-sand beach. Budget Hotels on the South Coast
OceanBlue – An oceanfront boutique hotel located on the rugged coral coastline along the southern tip of Barbados. It has ocean views, but no beach. It’s a good budget option if you’re planning on exploring the island, as little is close by.
Blue Haven Holiday Apartments – Offers newly renovated self-catering, short-term accommodations. No ocean view, but it is a short walk to Dover Beach and there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance.

East Coast | Surfing & Wild Beauty
The east coast of Barbados is very different to the west or south coasts! It’s much more rugged and less developed. While the east coast isn’t a popular area to stay among tourists, it is well known among advanced surfers!
In fact, there are surf competitions held here. Even Kelly Slater has said the wave at Soup Bowl is one of his favorites! Besides world class waves, it’s a beautiful coast to see!
While you cannot jump in and swim like you can in most of Barbados, there are tide pools that allow you to enjoy a dip during low tide. There are beautiful rocks adorning this coast and overall, it’s a rugged and quiet coast worth seeing at least once whether you are spending 1 day in Barbados or more.
There are more rental homes on this coast than hotels. If you’re not a surfer, you may enjoy a quieter stay and lovely sunrises, but there are less restaurants and things to do on this coast overall.
This is the best area in Barbados to stay for advanced surfers or tourists seeking a quiet retreat.

Find Your Stay in the Best Area of Barbados for Your Trip

North Coast | Worth a Visit but Not a Stay
The northern part of Barbados is not really where any tourists will stay, but it is worth visiting! I love the rocky coastline and if you time your visit right, Animal Flower Cave is a fun place to explore.
The swimmable beaches are basically on the west coast and the northern part of the island is more cliffs and rough waters. Saint Lucy parish is worth a visit, but it’s not really the best area in Barbados to stay.
Another place to visit in this parish is the Mount Gay Rum Distillery. Barbados is considered the birthplace of rum and Mount Gay is the original!
