Best Day Trips in Barbados: Top Tours Worth Your Time
The best day trips in Barbados range from snorkeling with sea turtles and catamaran cruises to rum tastings and full island tours. Whether you have a few hours or a full day, there’s an experience worth adding to your itinerary, especially if it’s your first or second time to the island.
Even though Barbados is my birthplace and my trips usually involve visiting family, I’ve explored the island, driven around it multiple times, and booked day tours on various trips.
For such a small island, Barbados has a lot of day trip style options! You can choose history, rum, gardens, caves or get an overview of the island! I’ll break down your options so you can choose what is best for you!
Quick Tips Before You Book
If pickup and dropoff are important to you, be sure to check whether the tour will offer pickup from the cruise terminal or your accommodation. Sometimes it’s clear and other times you will want to contact the tour directly.
If you happen to be staying on the east coast, some tours only pick up from west and south coast hotels. Think of the east coast like the country or suburbs, which is why it’s often not offered, even on a small island.
If you are looking for what to do in Barbados from the cruise ship, be sure to check the times of the tour. You don’t want to miss getting back in time.
Most tours offer free cancellation until a certain date, so make note and book the date your prefer. Then be sure to contact the tour directly if you have any questions. For example, some tours have requirements for fitness level, so if you’re not sure if it’s a good fit, it’s best to ask.
- Ensure the tours offer pickup at or near the cruise terminal
- Be sure to check the times of the tour to your cruise schedule
- Contact the tours directly if in doubt
- Some tours have fitness requirements
Want to Do Your Own Day Trip?
Barbados is a small island, so you can rent a car or book a taxi and do most of the island tours on your own. Of course, booking a tour does help take out a lot of guesswork, but I like the adventure of it sometimes.
For a taxi, use the PickUP Barbados app. It’s perfect if you want to do one thing like Harrison’s Cave, visit Mount Gay Rum, or enjoy a beach day in Barbados.
If you rent a car, a lot of companies will deliver the car to you, so contact them directly.
If you do decide to venture on your own, just remember Barbados is one of the most densely populated islands so try to avoid high traffic times, especially if you are on a schedule.
If you’re interested in driving around the island for your one day in Barbados, I have an itinerary ready for you! It’s perfect if you want to go at your own pace, see a lot, and you’re willing to drive. It also includes top sights on each coast, so you can create your own itinerary as well!

Water & Ocean Day Trips
A list of the best day trips in Barbados would not be complete without water and ocean related tours! It is an island after all!
While I think these day tours in Barbados are worth doing, I also love a beach day! If you are arriving by ship, consider the best beaches in Barbados near the cruise port if these tour options don’t end up resonating with you.
Overall, you really can’t go wrong in beautiful Barbados!
Catamaran & Snorkeling with Turtles
I’ve done this catamaran style tour multiple times over the years, so I would definitely consider it as one of the best day trips in Barbados. It’s such a relaxing excursion offering drinks, food, beautiful coastal views, and time in the ocean snorkeling with sea turtles.
You can enjoy the beauty of the west coast with an open bar. Snorkel with sea turtles and just relax on the catamaran. Barbados Catamaran Turtle Snorkel with Open Bar also offers pickup just outside the cruise terminal making it an easy excursion!
This Barbados Catamaran Turtle and Shipwreck Snorkeling Cruise has over 2,000 reviews of happy customers! The meeting point is a 20-minute walk from the Barbados cruise terminal making it an easy tour to do while in Barbados for the day. There is a 3 hour or 5 hour option, which is perfect if you want to do other activities.
If you’re an early riser, consider the Che’s Snorkel trip! turtles, shipwrecks & photos (semi private) tour. It offers a smaller group experience and sets out earlier to beat the crowds. Meeting location will also change based on conditions, so keep that in mind. You’ll also want to read the details as you must be able to climb the ladder into the boat and swim.
If you wanted to enjoy a beach day in Barbados, consider a Barbados Sunset and Snorkeling Catamaran Cruise. This sunset option might be the next one I do, when I’m back on the island!

Snorkeling with Sea Turtles
If you don’t want the catamaran experience, there are options for simply snorkeling with sea turtles that will take less time and cost less money. The Barbados Turtle and Shipwreck Snorkel Adventure is highly rated and very affordable.
If you are staying on the south or west coast, they offer pick-up making it very convenient. Additionally, they offer pickup for cruise ship passengers or if you like to walk, the journey to the meeting points take 24 or 36 minutes.
After the snorkel tour, you can continue to enjoy the bay, and if you’re up for a short walk, I recommend a fish cutter from Cuzz at Pebbles Beach.

Luxury Cruise with Lunch and Open Bar (includes Snorkeling)
This Barbados -Luxury Cruise with Lunch and Open Bar offers the lunch, open bar, and snorkel experience similar to the catamaran, but is much more intimate. The group size is capped at 15, making this perfect for those who don’t want a crowded experience.
No pickup is offered, but it would be an easy 30-minute walk from the Barbados cruise terminal to the meeting point. While this tour costs a bit more than the catamaran, it offers a much more personal experience.

Surf Lessons
I’ve done beginner surf lessons in Barbados and loved it! The south coast is typically a great place to learn and when I did lessons I was taken to several different beaches. You will need to organize your own transport and the location will be based on current weather and wave conditions, so keep that in mind.
Che’s Surf School has excellent reviews and it’s easy to book on Viator. I booked my lessons directly with Barry’s Surf School, which I also recommend.
If you do decide to book a surf lesson, general fitness is required. Surfing looks much easier than it is, especially when you’re paddling out constantly. Bethany Hamilton amazes me more every time I paddle out and my arms are exhausted!
Learning to surf in paradise is a wonderful day trip in Barbados and memories you will keep for a long time!

Half-Day Private Charter on a J/24 Racing Sailboat
Continuing on the more intimate theme, this half-day private charter is priced per group and can accommodate up to four people. This is less about relaxation and more about adventure, which definitely would appeal to me!
You get to learn about sailing, while enjoying paradise! They don’t offer lunch, but they do have soda, water, snacks, and snorkel gear available. They only have a few reviews on Viator, but on google there’s more and all are positive. If you want to be on the water, learn about sailing, and enjoy a more private, intimate adventure, this Barbados: Half-Day Private Charter on a J/24 Racing Sailboat is for you!

The best day trips in Barbados, when not in the water, can be truly varied! Whether you want food, rum, caves, or views, there’s a day trip for you!
Rum Tastings
If you enjoy rum tastings, this will make Barbados worth visiting for you! Barbados is considered the originator of Rum, since they possess the earliest recorded history. Perhaps debatable, but Mount Gay Rum is old.
You can easily walk to the Mount Gay Visitors’ Centre from the cruise terminal and it will take about 25 minutes on foot. However, if you are on the island for more than a day or want to make more of an event of it, you can book the Discover Rum Barbados Tour.
With this tour you will visit Mount Gay second, but your first stop will be Foursquare Rum Distillery. Pickup and dropoff is included in the price and youth get a discounted ticket.
If you are currently debating between a tour or self drive day, you can easily make this part of your self drive day! St. Nicholas Abbey is also a great stop for rum tasting!

Racehorse Swim Experience
If you’re an early riser or willing to get up for an adventure like me, this morning swim is up your alley! Arrive around 6AM to Pebbles Beach to either watch or swim with racehorses!
You do not need to book a tour, but just know the horses may not show up on a random day. If you want a tour guide to help, you can book this Experience the Swimming Horses at Carlisle Bay & the Garrison. They do offer pickup and will also take you around the Garrison, offering some historical insight.
Since this has become quite a draw, you will likely have to pay to swim or take photos with the horses. The tour does not include this fee, so go with that expectation whether on your own or with the tour.
